Lewis Alumna Feature: Georgi Presecky '17

Lewis alumna Georgi Presecky ’17 was surrounded by some of the best storytellers growing up – her parents. Georgi’s mom was a teacher, and her dad was a reporter at the Chicago Tribune for more than 30 years. Both avid readers, they instilled the love of words in her at a young age.

“The written word has always been my passion,” said Georgi. “I love classic novels and great TV and have written in a journal every single day since I was 13 years old.”

After earning a perfect score on the English portion of the ACT in high school, Georgi knew that storytelling was what she wanted to do for the rest of her life.

Fast forward to 2017 after graduating from Lewis, she began managing social media and outreach for FF2 Media, a website promoting the work of women in film.

Once the pandemic hit and theaters closed, Georgi was forced to pivot careers. She now works for Patch where she writes daily newsletters for residents of Oak Park, Forest Park, and Lakeview and assists in news content and press releases in several states. Patch is a community platform, and Georgi enjoys curating hyperlocal news to keep readers informed about their communities.

Like so many, the pandemic has been one of the most challenging aspects of Georgi’s career over the last two years.

“Being immersed in breaking news every day, reading story after story about the pain caused by COVID-19, has been difficult. Covering such tragedy and seeing the way some readers callously dismiss so much death and heartache, is still very painful. It’s the nature of news that bad things happen every day, but the biggest challenge is finding the bright spots – and responding calmly to dangerous misinformation,” added Georgi.

While studying at Lewis, Georgi was involved in working on the campus newspaper known as The Flyer. As editor-in-chief her senior year she learned a lot about being a leader and making decisions for a team of 20 people. Georgi, along with many other Lewis students, led The Flyer to great success by winning awards from the Associated Collegiate Association and the American Scholastic Press Association.

The experiences she had at Lewis allowed her to realize her full potential and helped kickstart her career. From understanding how to localize news and find the right angle, editing in AP style, or managing the layout of a 20-page newspaper in one night, the Lewis Communications Department gave her the opportunity to grow her skills and be a successful writer.

She also recognizes the importance and value of a lifelong Catholic education.

“Knowing that my education came from a deeper place, rooted in faith, helps me to stay level-headed in my work now. ‘The search for truth’ is right there in Lewis’ mission statement, and that’s what I’ve tried to do in my work. From getting to the truth of a movie at FF2 or getting the facts right at Patch, living out the values of honesty and integrity have been really important to me. Lewis also emphasizes ‘the complete person.’ Going to White Sox games, watching “Ted Lasso”, touring breweries, and reading Nick Hornby books is just as important to me as my work. Lewis taught me the importance of balancing your life and personality with your career and daily tasks.”

Although she has grown over the years, Georgi is still that young girl that continues to write in a journal every day. The passion she puts into her work still comes from that same place. Lewis University embraced and fostered her professional and personal development, allowing Georgi to explore her passions and pursue her true calling.
